Walk the route a child or dog would take
Start at the back door. Walk to the driveway, side gates, trash bins, play equipment and any pool. Mark places where the enclosure meets the house, changes elevation or leaves an opening around a utility feature. Ask the installer to show these transitions on the proposal rather than treating them as details for installation day.
For children, a fence is one layer of access control—not a substitute for supervision or a “childproof yard” guarantee. Around a pool, CDC recommends close, constant adult supervision as well as a four-sided barrier.[9]
Choose for your dog—not just the breed label
- Squeezing: Check the smallest openings at pickets, gate hinges, corners and the ground. A standard panel spacing does not automatically suit a small dog.
- Jumping or climbing: Explain past escapes and show nearby furniture, stacked materials and other potential climbing aids.
- Digging: Ask about a safe, site-appropriate lower-edge detail, drainage and utility conflicts before digging or adding buried material.
- Reacting to passersby: Discuss sightlines and behavior rather than assuming a solid fence will cure barking or reactivity.
- Gate rushing: Consider how people enter without immediately opening a path to the street. Ask whether a second controlled entry is practical.
These are design questions, not an escape-proof specification. If your dog has persistent escape behavior, fear or aggression, consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional. AVSAB recommends reward-based training.[15]
Physical versus electronic containment
An electronic boundary does not create a physical barrier against a stray animal entering the yard. VCA identifies this as a limitation of invisible fencing. It also does not serve as a physical enclosure for a child or pool.[16]
A published survey of dog owners recruited in Columbus pet stores found reported escapes with every containment method studied, with more reported escapes for electronic than physical fencing. This was observational, owner-reported research—not a controlled test of every product or modern GPS collar. It supports avoiding “escape-proof” promises, not a guarantee that any physical fence will work for your dog.[14]
A fenced yard is not necessarily an isolated pool
If a child can leave the house and reach the pool while still inside the yard fence, that perimeter does not isolate the pool. CDC recommends a four-sided fence separating the pool from both house and yard; self-closing, self-latching gates are part of that safety approach.[9]
Ask how mowing gates, pet doors, sheds, decks and play equipment interact with the pool boundary. Have the local authority review the actual barrier design and applicable rules; a “pool-rated” product description is not an approval of the completed installation.
Use a handover walk-through
Before treating the enclosure as ready, walk its whole perimeter with the installer. Operate every gate, check the agreed latch arrangements, look for ground gaps and discuss any unfinished work. Ask what to inspect after soil settles, landscaping changes or a storm.
Keep pool gates functioning and do not prop them open; AAP recommends self-closing, self-latching gates that open away from the pool. Continue adult supervision even after the fence is installed.[12]
